After triggering a $600,000 increase to his base salary in 2009, Seattle Seahawks right tackle Sean Locklear has taken a $2.2 million paycut to remain with the team for the 2010 season

Seattle Seahawks right tackle Sean Locklear has taken a $2.2 million paycut to remain with the team, Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network reports.

La Canfora adds that Locklear can make up that money based on performance, and that the final years of his contract have been voided, making him an unrestricted free agent following the 2010 season.

A third-round pick (84th overall) out of North Carolina State in 2004, Locklear entered the starting lineup his second season, makings 51 starts at right tackle between 2005 and 2008.

After the 2007 season, Locklear signed a 5-year, $32 million dollar contract extension that included $12 million dollars in guaranteed money, and contained an escalator clause that would increase his base salary if he played a certain amount of snaps at the left tackle position.

Locklear started at left tackle in 12 of the Seahawks' 20 games between 2008-09, triggering a $600,000 increase to his scheduled $4.85 million base salary for the 2010 season. Before his paycut, Locklear's $5.45 million base salary made him one of the highest-paid offensive tackles in the NFL.

The selection of Russell Okung with the sixth overall pick of the 2010 NFL Draft has moved Locklear back to right tackle, where he'll face competition from newly acquired Stacy Andrews to remain in the starting lineup. It is possible that the 6-4, 308-pound Locklear could move inside to a guard spot to get the 6-6, 342-pound Andrews on the field.
