Coach Gus Bradley presser highlights

Here are some highlights from new Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley's introductory press conference: When did you know you were going to be a head coach in the NFL? What about hiring assistant coaches?: "My philosophy was…

I'm not very goal oriented, and I know that sounds funny because here in the coaching business if you're not goal oriented, I guess it's professional goal. I never thought about when do I want to become a Defensive Coordinator? When do I want to become a Head Coach? I've never been like that. I've always been I'm a Linebacker's Coach in Tampa Bay I want to be the best Linebacker Coach I can be and all of that other stuff will take care of itself. I guess as far as when did I see myself as head coach? I really never thought about it. Pete and John in Seattle approached me and said things might be happening for you, you might be prepared for it, but it was during our stretch run and we were in the playoffs. In my mind that was the most important thing was trying to bring a championship to Seattle, so even in that time period I didn't think much about it. As far as assistant coaches we're in the process of doing that right now. Ultimately it's my responsibility, but I really have worked closely with Dave. We share ideas together and we're trying to bring in people that have the same philosophy as Shad. The passion for the game, the excitement, let's bring some enthusiasm to Jacksonville like the city deserves, and we're trying to find coaches that have that same type of demeanor."

On assistant coaching hiring process: "It's the best. We're trying to find the best. I know in the process of looking for assistant coaches, some of the mistakes in my conversation with some young coaches that went into it for the first time was they made decisions too quickly. That's been a mistake, and it's important to find out about people because it is a people business. There's going to be some really good times and there's going to be some tough times. During those tough times you want to really have quality people with you and that's what we're going to do. We're going to dig and find them, and I think in our mindset it doesn't matter, NFL, college, it doesn't matter. We're going to find the best. If it takes some time to do that. We're starting to put it together now and we're on the right track. Somewhere down the line we will announce those candidates and who's going to be part of this staff, but we'll take that time to do it."

On his personality: "Those words were probably used. My whole hope is to be genuine. That's it. I think the players they see through. They know who you are. To me, I just want to be me. We talked about during the whole head coach search. I love coaching football, I love helping players get better, coaches getting better, and I think for my role right now I had a great opportunity to lead 30 guys up in Seattle. What I am mostly excited about is to lead 80 guys. I love that opportunity to be a part of leading this team and try to maximize everybody. Not only the players but the coaches, and let's do it better than it's ever been done before. That's really how I've always approached things, and that fit right into the philosophy that both Dave and Shad want."

On the current roster: "We haven't had a chance to really go through it. I met Poz (Paul Posluszny) this morning. I talked to Mo (Maurice Jones-Drew) on the phone. Just their initial reaction, their excitement to bring a championship here to Jacksonville, I could feel their passion. It's been great. I know the evaluation process, that's one of the next steps that we'll take right after getting our assistant coaches in place and we'll be able to tell you that in the next few weeks."
