Seahawks to play SPY Game

Seahawks to play SPY Game

If the 4-9 Seahawks are to have any chance to upset the 8-4-1 Atlanta Falcons they will have to stop or at the very least contain the Falcons multi talented quarterback Micheal Vick.

Vick leads the team in passing and rushing. The only team that has been able to render Vick ineffective has been the Tampa Bay Buccaneers s defensive. In last Sunday's lost to the Bucs Vick was held to just 15 yards rushing on five attempts. His passing numbers were even worse.  Vick completed  just 12-of-25 passes for 125 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Two of Atlanta's four losses  have been to the Buccaneers,

If the Seahawks are to beat the Falcons they will have to contain Vick by having a  defense player shadow ( Spy) him on every play.

Seahawk Head Coach Mike Holmgren  believes the key to a Seahawk win is to minimize Vicks effectiveness." You have got to develop your game plan around dealing with him first. Your pass rush has to be very disciplined. Your contain game has to be a certain way. Your secondary people, when he breaks the pocket, they can't watch him, they've got to stay with their guy. I mean, all sorts of stuff happens with a guy who is good at it and willing too run like he does."

Seattle Linebacker Anthony Simmons will probably be the defensive player assigned to Spy on Micheal Vick. "You got to stay close to him, but you don't want to get too close. You don't want to get caught up in the line of scrimmage because that gives the lineman a chance to grab on to you and block you that way. You just want to get in front of him and keep your feet moving. You don't want to break down, because once you stop your feet he has you."

Another area of concern for the Seahawks is weather their own starting quarterback will be available for Sunday's match up.

Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has been nursing a sore left foot and will be a game time decision. If Hasselbeck is unable to go journeyman Jeff George will get the call.

Seahawk Head Coach Mike Holmgren is confident George can get the job done if called upon ; "Well, he's a veteran guy. He's played a lot of football. The minus would be he hasn't played in a game in a while. The plus is he can still throw it. That's pretty clear in practice. The minus would be he isn't as familiar with our stuff, not that we change the game plan dramatically, but we'd have to tailor it a little bit."

 Game Notes:

Although Seattle is 5-2 against Atlanta, the Falcons have won two of the last three games.

The Seattle offensive line gave up four sacks in last weeks lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Atlanta defense is third in the league with 40 sacks for the season.

The Falcons defense allows just 18.8 points a game. ( Sixth best in the NFL.)

Vick need just 12 rushing yards to pass  Tennessee's Steve McNair ( 674) for the most is a season by a quarterback.
