The Seattle Seahawks defense bent but never broke in it’s win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Defensive back Ken Lucas had two interceptions in leading the defense to one of its gutsiest performances of the year.
Lucas first interception came on Atlanta’s first possession of the game.
Seattle capitalized on the turnover when Shaun Alexander score on a 3yard run with 8:53 left in the first quarter. Rian Lindell converted the extra point and the Seahawks had a 7-0 lead.
Allen Rossum tied the game at 7-all when he scored on a 92 yard kick off return
Atlanta quarterback Micheal Vick hit wide out Alge Crumpler with a 20 yard pass to give the Falcons a 13 to 7 lead. Jay Feelys extra point made it 14 to 7 with 22 seconds left in the first quarter.
The two teams then exchanged turnovers with Lucas getting his second interception of the game and Heath Evans coughing up the ball inside the Atlanta five yard line.
After ineffective series by both offenses, Atlanta took advantage of a Matt Hasselbeck fumble at the Seattle 19 yard line and scored on a 22 yard field goal by Jay Feely.Half Time. Atlanta 17 Seattle 7
Seattle took the second half kick off and cut the deficit to 3 points on a 5 yard pass from Hasselbeck to Tight End Jeremy Steven.Seattle 14 Atlanta 17
DB Willie Williams picked up a Micheal Vick fumble and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. Seattle 21 Atlanta 17.
It looked as if Seattle would pull off the upset when Rian Lindell connected from 43 yards out with 2.00minutes left in the game.Seattle 24 Atlanta 17
Atlanta quarterback Micheal Vick then showed why he is considered the most talented player at his position.
Vick capped a 9 play , 77 yard drive with a 12 yard touchdown pass to Trevor Gaylor with 21 seconds left in the game.Feely made good on the extra point. Seattle 21 Atlanta 21 .
Atlanta won the coin toss and elected to receive.
Vick continued his display of athleticism.
Vick engineered a drive to the Seattle 18 yard line and it looked as if Seattle was about to absorb it’s tenth loss of the season.
Seattle caught a break when Atlanta kicker Jay Feely’s 36 yard field attempt sailed wide right.
Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck then drove the team to the Atlanta 27 yard line.Shaun Alexander then burst through the left side of the line for 27 yards and a score.Final Seattle 30 Atlanta 24.
“Not every season goes the way you want it to," said Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren after the game. "But we are professionals and you are expected to perform at the best of your abilities. The fact that we came from behind and battled on an away game like this I think says a lot about our character."
For Atlanta coach Dan Reeves the loss was extremely disappointing ;"It’s disappointing when you have a chance to win the game," said Atlanta head coach Dan Reeves. "You have to give them (Seattle) credit. They did a good job driving the ball down. A lot of people are hurting in our dressing room right now. I’m proud of the way we came back, and I’m proud of the way we fought to get the score tied. It was disappointing to miss the field goal and we didn’t do a good job defensively. It’s a huge disappointment."
After struggling in the first half with a sprained thumb Micheal Vick finished the day with 21-completion on 38 attempts, 240 yards -two touchdowns and two interceptions. Matt Hasselbeck was 22 of 38 , 298 yards and one touchdown. Seattle finished the day with four fumbles ,three of them were recovered by Atlanta. Shaun Alexander had 128 yards on 28 carries. Alexander earned his eighth career 100-yard rushing performance, and the Seahawks improved to 7-1 when he crosses the mark. He also surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing plateau for the second straight season.
