What’s represented below is the position the player plays, not where the player lined up. If Julius Jones lines up split wide, he was not counted as a wide receiver because he is a running back.

“Hybrid Moments”
The plan is to use first-round linebacker Aaron Curry all over the place, and Saturday night’s game offered some indication how that will be:

Seattle acquired Corey Redding with the plan to use him at left defensive end on first and second down, and have him slide inside to rush the passer as a defensive tackle on third downs. Redding is coming off a knee injury, and is only signed through the 2009 season, so it makes some sense for the ‘Hawks to want to develop some depth for that role.
Last year’s first-round pick Lawrence Jackson played that role quite a bit last season (129 of his 627 snaps in ’08 were from the tackle position), and could be asked to do more of it this season, too. Since you can never have too much depth,, the Seahawks picked up a pair of undrafted free agent defensive ends, Michael Bennett (6-4, 274) and Derek Walker (6-4, 270), whose size and aggressive play make them candidates to play the Redding Role.
Here’s how Bennett (who had a very good game) and Walker were used against the Chargers:

Misc. Blitz Info
Seattle blitzed on 13 of San Diego’s 53 pass attempts, with 7 of their blitzes being of the “zone blitz” variety, where a down lineman drops into coverage. None of Seattle’s blitzes resulted in a sack or interception, but Lance Laury and Will Herring both got hits on the quarterback.
When Seattle blitzed, Chargers’ quarterbacks were 6-of-13 for 68 yards (62.3) rating. Seattle blitzed on two third down plays, which resulted in a pair of completions for 27 yards (118.8 rating) and two first downs.
Here are the blitzers and the number of times they were sent:

With Laury and Herring frequently blitzing, it should come as no surprise that Nick Reed (4) and Derek Walker (2) dropped into coverage the most on zone blitzes. Aaron Curry (1) and Patrick Kerney (1) also dropped into coverage on zone blitzes. (Seattle ran 7 zone blitzes, with Reed and Walker both dropping into coverage on one call.)
