Seahawks Add Five From Tryouts
The five to be signed were wide receivers Mike Williams and Reggie Williams, fullback Ryan Powdrell, guard Mitch Erickson, and defensive back Kennard Cox.
Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Mike Williams (6-5, 230) played two seasons for Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll at USC, and was chosen with the 10th overall pick of the 2005 NFL Draft, despite being ineligible for the 2004 college season after hiring an agent and declaring for the 2004 NFL Draft, which he and Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett were ultimately ruled ineligible for.
Williams has caught just 44 passes for 539 yards and a pair of touchdowns during a 30-game career that also included stints with the Oakland Raiders and Tennessee Titans. Williams struggled with his weight during his first three seasons in the NFL, and has been out of the league since he was released by the Titans prior to their 2008 training camp.
After the first day of the mini-camp, Williams said he weighed "a lot", but appears to be in good shape, having slimmed down to 235 pounds.
Reggie Williams, the ninth overall pick of the 2004 NFL Draft out of the University of Washington, caught 189 passes for 2,322 yards and 19 touchdowns during his five years with the Jaguars, who opted not to re-sign him following the 2008 season.
Williams was arrested twice last off-season, which helped keep him out of football through the '09 season. Williams was arrested in February for DWI and possession of marijuana, charges which were later dropped. In April, he was tasered after becoming combative at a Houston-area bar, and a small bag of cocaine was found in his pocket. Williams plead guilty to drug possession charges, and was sentenced to two years' probation, 120 hours of community service, and fined $200.
Like Mike Williams, Powdrell played for Pete Carroll at USC, and also has a connection to Seahawks general manager John Schneider. When Powdrell went undrafted in 2007, he signed with the Green Bay Packers. Powdrell spent his rookie season on injured reserve, and was waived the following August.
Powdrell spent a week on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad that season, and was signed to a "Reserve/Futures" contract by the Pittsburgh Steelers last January, but was released prior to training camp.
A seventh-round pick (251st overall) out of the University of Pittsburgh by the Buffalo Bills in 2008, Cox made three tackles during the pre-season, but was waived towards the end of training camp. Cox spent several weeks on the Packers' practice squad before being signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars active roster.
Cox appeared in a pair of games for the Jaguars at end of the 2008 season, and was re-signed for the 2009 season. Cox had 7 tackles during the '09 pre-season, and spent much of the regular season shuttling between the Jaguars' active roster and practice squad. In six games for the Jaguars, Cox totaled three tackles.
Erickson, who played his college ball at South Dakota State, was signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2008. The 6-6, 290-pound guard spent the last two seasons on the practice squad, and has to appear in an NFL game.
In addition to these moves, the Seahawks waived guard Trevor Canfield, a seventh-round pick out of the University of Cincinnati by the Arizona Cardinals in 2009 who the Seahawks signed off the Cardinals' practice squad late last season.
