| Biography: |
2005: Greene was drafted by the Seahawks in the third round of the 2005 draft (85th overall).
College Career: Greene holds the rare distinction of being the only passer in school history to start every game during his four-year career … The unquestioned leader of the Bulldogs, he is like a gunslinger on the football field — staying cool under pressure and ready to fire from anywhere on the gridiron … Much like former St. Louis Cardinals great, Jim Hart, Greene became known as a "cardiac kid" after leading his team to victory by staging fourth-quarter rallies in seven contests (five of those rallies came vs. nationally-ranked teams — at South Carolina in 2004, Clemson, Alabama and Auburn in 2002 and Tennessee in 2001).
Greene was a USA Today All-American honorable mention and Atlanta Journal-Constitution all-state and Super Eleven pick at South Gwinnett (Snellville, Ga.) High School. He was named Gwinnett County's co-Offensive Player of the Year and Atlanta Touchdown Club Quarterback of the Year after completing 134 of 227 passes (59.1 percent) for 2,102 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior, leading the team to back-to-back playoff appearances … Heavily recruited out of high school, Greene decided to stay home and attend Georgia, where he was later joined by his childhood friend, All-American defensive end David Pollack, on the squad.
Greene redshirted in 2000, but after a superb performance in 2001 spring ball, he was handed the starting job before his first collegiate game and went on to start every contest he played in (51). He was chosen the Southeastern Conference's Freshman of the Year, as he set school freshman records with 2,789 yards on 192 of 324 passes (59.3 percent), 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions … Greene was named the most underrated player in the SEC by the Birmingham News as a sophomore and did not prove that paper wrong. He gained 2,924 yards (fourth-best season total in school history) with 22 touchdowns and eight interceptions on 218 of 379 passing (57.5 percent) and averaged 205.1 yards per game in total offense. He became sort of a cult hero around campus after leading three fourth-quarter comebacks (vs. Clemson, Alabama, Auburn) against top 25-ranked teams during the course of the season.
He was selected the SEC's Player of the Year by The Sporting News in 2002. Only Eric Zeier (24 in both 1993 and '94) had more touchdown passes in a season than Greene's 22 … While his yardage figures improved in 2003, his interception figure was the highest of his career (11) while his touchdown pass output was the lowest (13). Greene completed 264 of 438 passes (60.3 percent) for 3,307 yards, but also lost 180 yards on 69 carries. He joined Zeier (3,482 in 1993, 3,457 in 1994) as the only players in school history to amass over 3,000 yards in total offense (3,127) in a season. His 3,307 aerial yards rank third on Georgia's annual record chart behind Zeier (3,525 in 1993, 3,396 in 1994) … Before his senior season, the coaching staff refined the playbook and went with a short-to-intermediate passing attack. The results proved to be record breaking for Greene.
One of eight athletes in the NCAA Division 1-A ranks to earn National Scholar-Athlete honors from the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Greene became the winningest quarterback in NCAA Division 1-A annals with 42 victories, topping the previous mark of 39 |
