Seahawks Acquire RB Leon Washington from Jets
The Seahawks also acquired a seventh-round pick from the Jets, the 236th overall selection in this year's draft.
Washington, a fourth-round pick (117th overall) out of Florida State in 2006, led the Jets in rushing (650 yards in 8 starts) as a rookie. Overall, Washington has gained 1,782 yards and scored 13 touchdowns on the ground after splitting carries with former teammate Thomas Jones the last three seasons. The 5-8, 195-pound running back has emerged as a multi-dimensional threat, catching 123 passes for 969 yards and a pair of touchdowns out of the backfield, and averaging nearly 10 yards per punt return and 25.5 yards on kick returns.
Washington has returned four kicks for touchdowns during his career, and led the NFL in all-purpose yardage (2,337) in 2008, earning Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors. 2009 was the final year of Washington's rookie contract, and he had hoped to parlay that into a long-term contract offer from the Jets, or from one of the other 31 NFL teams, this off-season.
Washington suffered a broken right fibula in a Week 7 win over the Oakland Raiders, ending his season on injured reserve. Washington has signed his one-year tender, which will pay him $1.759 million dollars in 2010.
